school supplies for La ceiba, honduras
October 2021. The largest city in northern Honduras is La Ceiba, founded 143 years ago between two rivers, the Danto to the west and the Cangrejal to the east. La Ceiba was originally a banana port in the early days of the banana republics.
In November 2020, Honduras was struck by two hurricanes, Eta, and Iota. Hurricane Eta flooded large swaths of Northern Honduras. Two weeks later Hurricane Iota's winds exacerbated the flooding damage by destroying infrastructure and knocking down trees. The resulting devastation was tragic. These two hurricanes inflicted national damage estimated at $15 billion or 60% of Honduras GDP.
The Denver Cherry Creek Rotary (DCCR) Club has aided this area through two annual dental missions over the last three years and assistance to a local school. It reached out to a local NGO and 501 (c)(3) organization, Cuero y Salado, and asked what the immediate needs were to assist the local communities. The response was for school supplies. The DCCR Club raised $2,000 which was matched by an equal amount from the Rotary District 5450 matching grant program. There is no reliable source in Honduras for these supplies, so they were purchased in the United States and shipped to La Ceiba. The supplies arrived in Honduras in July and were delivered to several schools in the area. The supplies included crayons, pens, pencils, notebooks, construction paper, glue, and other items, benefiting 500 students.

A note of thanks from the Rotary Club of Roatan for our donation of masks, gloves, disinfectant and other supplies. The items were remaining from our dental mission to Honduras in 2019--we were storing supplies in Roatan for future dental mission work.
Dear Rotary Friends from Denver Cherry Creek Colorado: I want to thank you again for your donation of PPE from your dental brigade to the people of Honduras. The timing of your donation was incredible. Our public health department had just run out of gloves and all PPE is in short supply. Your donation was delivered directly to Dr. Jayleen Coleman, director of the Bay Islands Health Department. The donation will be used in our Covid-19 Treatment Center, a 30-bed public treatment facility that was created on the island of Roatan. |

Dental Mission
Toothaches are not just a pain, they keep kids out of school and negatively impact nutrition, which can hold a person back for a lifetime. For over 20 years, our club has sent a team of dentists to remote villages to provide dental care to kids who may have never seen a dentist before (and may never see one again). Dentists from Rotary Clubs across the country, as well as non-Rotarian dentists, coordinate with local Rotary Clubs in Central and South America to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars of free dental care every year, but what they bring home is valuable, too - a deeper understanding of another culture and memories of smiling kids and grateful parents. Please enjoy a few informative slides about our trip to Honduras in September 2019.
